I use drawing and collage as my cue into the painting process. I gather and process information with drawing, while the collages are spontaneous and improvised material statements made in the spirit I endeavor to paint. I use plasticine in my work, pushing it into the paint to rescue the surface from the familiar. Plasticine has been a staple in my studio for some time, appearing first as the subject for painting before becoming a material part. The collages led to paintings in which, responding to the surface, I follow my nose down sidetracks and detours, adding stuff then pulling things off and erasing them. From the mess stories emerge like distant versions of an initial desire which, for me, is the failure and thrill of painting. |
