Being misled is often referred to as being ‘led up the garden path.’ A notion I rather enjoy in art, being deliberately thrown off course in order to re-evaluate the familiar. In recent works a geometric band runs across the base of a painting. It recalls the tiled Victorian pathway that leads up to my own front door, like a domestic stage for figures to collude, dance, fight and generally fall apart. These ‘garden paths’ could well imply an underlying deception. The characters are certainly all flawed. And materially too, the paintings are not what they initially seem. However, the only real leading done, that I can vouch for with any certainty, is done during the activity itself, where I am willingly led astray out of curiosity.
